From Sea to Sea Route in Ancona

Walk the From Sea to Sea Route  in Ancona, a scenic 2.5–3 km urban walk that connects the harbour and Piazza della Repubblica with the cliffs and sea of Passetto. This mostly flat route (about 45–60 minutes, difficulty 2/5) follows Corso Mazzini and Corso Garibaldi through the historic centre, passes the 13 Cannelle Fountain, Piazza Roma and Piazza Cavour, and then continues along tree‑lined Viale della Vittoria to the War Memorial and Passetto.

1. Start: Harbour / Piazza della Repubblica

Begin the From Sea to Sea Route at Piazza della Repubblica, between the harbour and Ancona’s old town. From the square you join Corso Mazzini and Corso Garibaldi, the traditional shopping streets that cut across the city from west to east.

2. 13 Cannelle Fountain (Fontana del Calamo)

Walk along Corso Mazzini until you reach the 13 Cannelle Fountain (Fontana del Calamo), a Renaissance fountain with thirteen bronze masks of satyrs and fauns pouring water and a central knight, symbol of the city. Local legend says that whoever drinks from this fountain will return to Ancona.

3. Piazza Roma – crossroads of the historic districts

Continue to Piazza Roma, one of Ancona’s main squares located between Corso Mazzini and Corso Stamira and crossed by Corso Garibaldi. This lively square marks the meeting point of the historic districts and is a good place to stop for a coffee or quick shopping break.

4. Piazza Cavour – gateway to Viale della Vittoria

Keep walking east to reach Piazza Cavour, dominated by the statue of Italian statesman Camillo Benso di Cavour. The square forms the transition between the 19th‑century centre and the modern residential neighbourhoods and marks the start of Viale della Vittoria along the From Sea to Sea Route.

5. Viale della Vittoria – tree‑lined avenue towards the sea

From Piazza Cavour follow Viale della Vittoria, a one‑kilometre tree‑lined avenue created in the 20th century. This elegant boulevard links the city centre to the Passetto district and is lined with historic cafés, shops and benches, offering a pleasant shaded walk all the way to the sea.

6. Passetto & War Memorial – end of the From Sea to Sea Route

Viale della Vittoria opens onto Piazza IV Novembre and the War Memorial (Monumento ai Caduti), overlooking the cliffs of Passetto. From here you can enjoy a wide view of the Adriatic Sea, the rocky coastline and the fishermen’s caves below; a long staircase and a lift connect the square to Passetto Beach, where you can relax by the water and complete your journey “from sea to sea”.
